Barry
Carroll is the kind of person who has a natural gift for putting
others at ease from the very first moment of interaction. It's
no wonder then, that his career of over 30 years has been filled
with roles that involve supporting and encouraging others as they
work to achieve their personal and professional goals. He sees
himself as a "peacemaker" who can help individuals and groups
deal with and resolve potential or ongoing conflict in a constructive
and healing way.
Barry
joined Self-Help Network in July 2002 as a Community and Organizational
Specialist working with mental health consumer-run organizations
across Kansas to help leaders of those organizations effectively
manage the day-to-day activities and address the challenging issues
that confront so many non-profit organizations. Barry also contributes
to SHN activities through his work with other staff members in
providing other community organizations and nonprofits strategic
planning assistance. Barry enjoys traveling the state and working
with other Kansans who want to improve their communities.
Prior
to coming to Self-Help Network, Barry served as the Case Management
Director for Sedgwick County's COMCARE Community Support Services
Program. He was responsible for providing supervision for six
teams of case managers who worked with persons with mental illness.
Early in his career, Barry worked as a protective services social
worker in rural Kentucky. He later accepted a position with Western
Kentucky University as the state Social Services Coordinator for
Project Head Start. Barry moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1982. After
working for Big Brothers/Sisters and in the drug/alcohol field,
Barry accepted a position with the City of Wichita. For 15 years,
he worked with the Citizen Participation Organization, a group
of citizen councils that addressed neighborhood concerns and made
recommendations to the City Council.
For
the past twelve years, Barry has received extensive training in
conflict resolution. Barry has mediated disputes in both the public
and private sectors. He is currently a Kansas State Approved Mediator.
Barry holds a masters of Social Work degree with an emphasis in
administration and planning from the University of Kansas.
When
not working, Barry loves being outdoors. He is a strong proponent
of holistic health - mind, body and spirit. He enjoys running,
cycling and home maintenance activities. He is proud of his family
and enjoys spending time with his three children, his daughter-in-law
and his two grandsons.
